Happy Easter from Walnut Kitchen Garden
Happy Easter everyone on this beautiful Easter Sunday.
Can you believe the weather? Three bright sunny days on a bank holiday, unheard of! I hope you’ve all managed to get out and about enjoying the marvellous spring flowers that are appearing everywhere.
I heard a rumour that it’s going to rain tomorrow, but we’ll think about that tomorrow!
Today we’re just going to soak up all the sunny joys that an April Easter bank holiday brings.
For the last few weeks there’s been a real blue and yellow theme here in the garden, which always makes me think of Easter.
No more so than in my new little planting patch, where the totem pole was removed from a few weeks ago, and the Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diabolo’ moved backwards into its space.
I planted the new purple tree peony in the middle just behind the Pulmonaria, that’s now been flowering and keeping the bees happy for weeks.
I don’t suppose I’ll get any flowers this year, but the dark foliage is very pleasing.
I’ve always had yellow primulas at that end of the woodland border. This year they had really bulked up, so I split them and dotted them around.
Some tête-à-têtes and blue hyacinths I planted last year came up, to be honest I’d forgotten about them. I love it when things pop up like that.
To complete it the blue Scillas, originally planted under, the then tiny lavender shrubs have seeded themselves everywhere. Including into the gravel at the side of the path. So for weeks now I’ve been carefully digging them out and relocating them.
Sunshine Wakes Everything Up
The lovely weather of the last week really has started to wake everything up in the garden. I always say at this time of year, that it feels like if you stood still for long enough and watched, you’d actually see the garden growing.
When I’ve been out and about the deep blue skies have been a fabulous backdrop for the blossom on the trees.
The pink blossom on our red trees, Prunus ‘Pissardii Nigra’ has now gone leaving the newly formed leaves which start out with an orange tinge, before turning dark Burgundy.
Even are fruit trees have decided it’s safe to come out this week. The two pears are absolutely covered in flowers, and bees.
The Cherry has made a tentative start at opening up and even more exciting, the new Victoria Plum has a little blossom on. We’ve now lost two plum trees and we’ve said if this one dies we are taking the hint that plums don’t like our garden. Anyway at the moment I’m thinking third time lucky.
The Party Girls are Arriving
And so as new life bursts out all around us, with all the fresh new foliage looking bright green and perfect
Even the real party girls have started to arrive, the tulips! Only the first one or two, but there friends will surely follow.
What’s Tipping my Pot
There is another cause for excitement this week, I noticed the plant pot in front of the strawberry staircase was tilted over. Had a cat disturbed it?
No, the rhubarb was ready! It only feels like five minutes since I had a little peep under the pot and not much was happening. Guess we’ll be having rhubarb crumble after our Easter Sunday roast!
Wishing you all a lovely Easter Sunday and I hope you get to enjoy an Easter egg or two.
Stay safe & happy bank holiday gardening.
