Garden Diary – The white borders turned into a white garden!
When I started Monday off with a photo from one of the white borders down in the white garden, little did I know just how white the whole garden would be by Tuesday morning!
Yes I know the weather forecast said snow, but the last time I looked it had changed it’s mind to sleet. And when was the last time we had that much snow in November? Let’s face it, it’s been a very strange weather year all together!
The garden has certainly had a good watering this year. I’m expecting great things from the trees and shrubs next year. I’ve always found they’ve been better after a wet year, so I’m hoping for a bumper fruit crop!
It had started sleeting on Monday before we’d shut the blinds, so later on I couldn’t resist a little peep out, to my surprise it already white over. By morning we’d got a good few inches and my immediate thought was for my winter cabbage. I decided that the clue is in the name and I’m sure they’d be fine.
The plant that looked the worst off was the bamboo, it had been bent right over with the wait of the snow. When it finally stopped it was time for a good brush bashing, very therapeutic! It just swung back up flicking wet snow all over me in the process!
Despite the snow starting to melt in the afternoon it had given a hard frost, so remembering the chilli plants still in the greenhouse, the under gardener and I did a chilli rescue operation with our head torches on. What a sight we must have been going up and down the path!
The snow melted slowly over the next few days, halted each night by freezing temperatures. Most of the plants re-emerged looking largely un-fazed by the cold, but the perennials in the border will now know it’s time to go to sleep!
By Sunday all the snow had been washed away by the weekends rain, and the resilient winter flowering pansies and cyclamen in the pots were still flowering their little heads off!

The viburnum only just scrapes through into the white garden, with its pink tinge 🌿🤍🌸🤍🌿 but the insects love it & so do I 🪰 #whiteflowers #whitegarden #shrubs

So finally after flowering on & off all year, I think it’s safe to say this is the last you’ll see of ’Mary Rose’ this year 🌿🌸🌿 Have a well earned rest now my dear 💕🌸💕#RoseWednesday #roses @DAustinRoses #flowers #pinkflowers

The snow has frozen over night, so it’s a rather cold morning 🥶❄️So glad I covered the dahlias in the greenhouse in fleece, & rushed the chilli plants indoors on Monday night with a head torch on in the snow. Sorry no photo evidence 🤣 #snow #frost #mygarden #gardening

Hardy red onions ❤️🧅❤️ well hopefully 🙏 For all of you with slippery conditions, take care ❄️🥶❄️🥶❄️ #growyourown #kitchengarden #onions #food

I think the strawberries 🍓 might be over for this year 🤔🤣 The under gardener made the mini staircase out of some reclaimed wood 🌿🍓🌿🍓🌿🍓🌿 #snow #strawberry #growyourown #kitchengarden #Homegrown #homemade #food #reclaimed

These red cabbages are almost too good looking to eat, the outer leaves look metallic & get redder as you peel. I feel some sweet, spiced cabbage coming on over the weekend 🌿❤️🥬❤️🌿 #growyourown #cooking #spicedredcabbage #homegrown
