Finger Licking Raspberries
Weekly Garden Diary

Garden Diary – Finger Licking Raspberries hands, wave goodbye to the Rhubarb

The finger licking raspberries obviously realise that September has dawned and as ‘Autunm fruiting’ raspberries it is their time to shine. They do get confused every year and start fruiting in mid summer, but only a few at a time and they are pretty small.

But they have now gone into overdrive producing huge berries that need picking everyday. The acting head garden has been busy with his new found talent for baking, moving on from blueberry cake to rhubarb cake and now raspberry cake. I’ll be putting weight on!

He’s made the last rhubarb cake of the year as it was time to stop picking and let the plants build up reserves for the winter.

We’ve been eating apples called Discovery for a few weeks now, they are the first to ripen, unfortunately they don’t store so must be either eaten or cooked. And the glut tomatoes continues at a rate of knots. At this rate we’ll need a third freezer!

There are still plenty of flowers blooming, especially down in the white garden. As I’ve said before it looks good in spring and again in late summer. I still need to work on the middle bit!

I’m also pleased to report plenty of insect life around. As the sedums started to open they were covered in honey bees, hurray, better late than not at all!

Obviously not taken this morning as it’s grey & raining ☔️

Still not quite the ‘Gourmansun’ tomato that the seeds were sold as, but there’s definitely a family resemblance 🤣🍅🌿 #surpriseseeds #tomatotuesday #tomatoes #gyo

Morning 💙
One of the few true blue flowers – Salvia ‘Blue Angel’ 💙🌿
It’s not fully hardy but it’s come back for years now in my free draining soil #TuesdayBlue #grownfromseed #flowers

Despite growing chillies for years, I’ve always struggled with getting a decent sized sweet pepper 🫑 So this year I’m a happy lady 🧡🌿

As there’re no attractive looking roses in my garden this week, I’m taking you back to David Austin’s stand at the RHS Chelsea flower show. This is Rosa ‘James L. Austin 🌿💕😍🌸🌿

That’s the end of the rhubarb season, time to stop picking!
The acting head gardener both harvested & baked a rhubarb cake 🍰 plus there’s plenty stewed & crumbled in the freezer, so the flavour will continue for a while yet 😋🌿

Apple ‘Discovery’ is a great early eater, fresh & juicy with some lovely tropical fruit flavours. The crimson skin can be seen right across the garden. It’s even pink under the skin💕
One downside, it doesn’t keep, but as it’s the first it’s not a problem 😋🍎🌿

My white Thalictrum thrives down in the white garden, 6ft high with frothy flowers & Aquilegia type foliage 🌿🤍🌿🤍🌿
It’s in shade for most of the day & dry soil under the walnut tree. It obviously likes challenging conditions! My pink one on the other-hand has a sunny position in richer soil & has never got going – ready for a move I think! 🤔

Whether you still call them Sedums or you’ve updated & got your tongue around Hylotelephiums. The bees don’t care, they absolutely love them 🌿🌸🐝🌸🐝🌸🐝🌿

These asters, like some other flowers this year have incredibly slow to open! Worth the wait though 🌿💕💜💓🌿

Boil up the raspberries with a little sugar & honey. Spoon into ice-cube trays & freeze for later joy 🌿😋💕

Rudbeckia ‘Goldstrum’ in full swing. A very reliable perennial I first grew from seed well over 10yrs ago. I now have patches all over 🌿💛🖤🌿🌼🌿🖤💛🌿
