Blue skies
Weekly Garden Diary

Garden Diary – Does the sky look bluer this week?

Last week, in between the pretty good balance of sunny spells and showers, I kept feeling that the blueness of the sky seemed much more intense, so much so that I googled it. I know we say this all the time now, but, what did we do before googling? I suppose we just wondered!

Anyway it turns out that I am quite right, the sky is bluer in autumn and it’s all due to the temperature dropping and humidity levels falling. This drier air means less scattering of the blue light, allowing more of it to reach our eyes and making the sky appear more blue.

I thought that was very interesting and as Steve Wright would have said, it’s my factoid of the week!

There was still some real heat in the sunshine when it did pop out and the insects were still busy preparing for the cooler times.

One day when I was working in the greenhouse, the sun was so hot that I was absolutely boiling and had to go and pick a few more peas and beans.

I was incredibly late sowing them, but as ever they have grown so quickly and we are now rediscovering all the things we turn them into.

The rainfall has really changed the look of the borders, all those sad looking plants with wilting leaves look quite revived. I’m also pleased with how many flowers are still around as we dip into autumn.

But a reminder of the season we are now in, is the apples starting to drop to the ground. We now (mainly the gardeners mate) have to check each day to see if anymore are ready to be harvested to stop them from dropping and bruising.

We had a couple of colourful beetroots to eat last week which were as delicious as they were pretty. The golden variety in particular have a more subtle flavour and were my introduction to enjoying them. Isn’t it funny how your tastes change!

I’m quite pleased with how colourful this corner still looks. So many flowers came & went very quickly with the dryness, but the rain is helping to prolong these later flowers 🌿💕💛🌺🌿

These Sugarsnap peas are exactly what they say on the box! They are so sweet & no need for all that podding palaver, the hardest thing is getting them to the kitchen 😄🫛🫛🫛
