Garden Diary – Planning, Weather & Christmas Choirs

It’s a time for looking back at photos of how the garden looked this year, and deciding what worked well and what needs improvement. The photographs are an invaluable tool to remind you of how things looked.

I was particularly pleased with the dwarf tulips I grew for the first time. And as I grew them in pots I’m quite hopeful that they’ll come again.

There were many pictures of my purple rhododendron which is already covered in buds. And lots of the Pink ranunculus which have shot up lots of foliage, I have no idea whether they are supposed to have done that at this time of year.

I popped my autumn onion sets into small pots to start them off but unfortunately haven’t yet had chance to plant them in the raised beds. This weather is all over the place, if it’s mild enough to be outside, it’s raining, and on the dry days it’s freezing. Yes, I’m a fair weather gardener!

To be honest I find I am counting down the days to the shortest day, I know there is no immediate change but mentally it just cheers me up thinking we are going the right way again.

The white Hellebores or common name Christmas rose, as the season is nearly upon us, have started to flower. They kick off the new flowering season, soon to be followed by the snowdrops and it all starts again.

Whilst I was looking through my photos, I came across one of the Christmas tree festival usually held at our local church, but unfortunately not this year. But we were treated to a Christmas concert at the weekend by one of the many local male voice choirs. A most excellent start to the festivities.

This was the first year that I’ve grown dwarf tulips & I was really pleased with them. They’re in pots so I’m hoping they come again.

This is a species variety, Tulipa humilis ‘Persian Pearl’ 🌿🩷🌿
